How to convert minutes to decimal hours

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours: decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours, and 1 hour 20 minutes = 1.33 hours.

Decimal hours back to hours and minutes

Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. For example, 8.6 hours = 8 hours + 0.6 × 60 = 8 hours 36 minutes.

Why payroll uses decimal hours

Pay is calculated by multiplying hours by the hourly rate, which only works with decimals. A common mistake is to treat 7:45 as 7.45 — that underpays 18 minutes. At 20 per hour, 7 h 45 min is 7.75 × 20 = 155.00, not 149.00.
